The Three Major Types of Power Tool Batteries

Cordless tool batteries are certainly a requirement in order for us to be able to use cordless power tools like a cordless power drill, hedge trimmer, leaf blower and many more. When buying a cordless power tool for your household projects, keep in mind that battery voltage is not the only important factor to consider. Other factors such as the battery's amp/hour capacity as well as its type should not be taken for granted when purchasing batteries for your cordless power tools.

Drill Battery Charger

Cordless tool batteries are available up to 36 volts. A 19.2-volt battery or even a 14.4-volt one can surpass the battery rating of a 36-volt battery if those batteries with lower voltage capacity have higher amp/hour capacity than the latter. In rating cordless tool batteries, voltage as well as Amp hour is considered. Ampere-hour is a measure of how long the battery can last, while voltage is a measure of the battery's electric current or power. Thus, basing on the information mentioned, the higher the voltage and the higher the amp/hour capacity, the more powerful the battery is.

Drill Battery Charger

The usual sizes available for cordless tools are 1.2, 2.4 and 3.0 Amp / hour. It's at the bottom part of the battery or sometimes on both sides where you locate the label that describes the batteries amp/hour rating.

There are three (3) major types that are used for modern cordless power tools. These include: Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad) and Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH).

Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad) offer up to 400 charge cycles before needing a replacement. Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) can last more than 400 times of recharge. Whereas, Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries can power up your cordless power tools with a lifespan of more than 1,200 times recharges (as per manufacturer's product description) before a required replacement.

What about their charging time? Majority of older ones need 6 hours of recharging time yet last only an hour when used for works. When buying batteries your cordless power tools, charging time should be put into consideration. You do not want to waste your precious time while working, just waiting for the battery to be fully charged. Using Lithium Ion battery can certainly overcome this problem and it is the best way since this battery only takes 15 minutes to recharge.

We usually follow the recommendation of the manufacturer when it comes to maintaining cordless power tool batteries. This usually involves replacement batteries that sometimes force you to spend money. Similar to your power tools including their parts, cordless tool batteries come with service warranty.

Cordless Impact Wrenches - 3 Critical Factors

So you've finally decided that you need a cordless impact wrench. The right impact is a great addition to anyone's toolbox, while the wrong one could make the purchase useless. The wrong one could either be something that is far too overpowered for what you need it for (so long as you've got variable torque this isn't too bad, but at the very least it'll likely be heavier and bulkier than necessary), or underpowered (this is much worse, because it nearly makes the tool useless). This article I'll be covering what to look for in a battery. How much power you need, what to look for in a charger, and what type of battery you need.

Drill Battery Charger

The most important aspect of an impact wrench is power. The whole point of an impact is to loosen those tough-to-get-off nuts and bolts, and if you don't have enough power, you're essentially left with an over-sized air ratchet. With cordless tools the power comes from the battery, and the key spec here is volts. Overall volts are the electric measurement for power. But more volts isn't always better... but it does mean bigger (if your comparing two of the same types of batteries), so if you're concerned about the size of your cordless impact, you may want to look for a battery with less volts.

Drill Battery Charger

How often will you be using your impact? And for how long? Are you the type that remembers to keep the batteries charged? Having a charger that quickly charges your batteries can be very important for some people. Some higher end cordless impacts have chargers that'll have you up and running in 15 minutes, while older chargers will often take up to 3 hours for a single battery. If you're going to be using your impacts for longer periods, or if you're often on tight deadlines and can't afford to wait for your batteries to charge, how quickly your batteries will charge is an important consideration.

Finally, what type of battery is the best? Nickel based batteries are the older style, are less expensive, but heavier and bulkier. NiMH specifically will lose its charge quickly in the cold. Lithium Ion batteries have a much higher energy density than nickel based batteries, which means you can have the same amount of power in a smaller package (or alternatively you can have more power in the same sized package). However Li-Ion batteries are the most expensive. Odds are that if you buy a higher end cordless impact (which I urge you do to, the cheap ones just aren't worth it), it'll come with Li-Ion batteries, so this probably won't affect which impact you buy, but just in case you are looking at older impacts, the difference between the batteries is important to know.

If you're buying a new cordless impact wrench, keep in mind how much power it's got (and how many volts the battery is), what to look for in a charger, and what the difference is between the different types of batteries.

DEWALT Introduces New Line of Compact 20V Lithium-Ion Power Tools

Not long after their release of the immensely popular 12V MAX line, this September DEWALT is dropping another bomb on the power tool community. In the form of a remastered 20V line of compact and innovative power tools, DEWALT intends to make your work-load lighter and your time on the job more comfortable and more efficient.

Drill Battery Charger

The new 20V MAX line includes seven power tools (and a worklight) redesigned, essentially, from the ground up: the DCD740C1 compact right angle drill kit, the DCD780C2 compact drill-driver kit (1.5-Ah), the DCD785C2 compact hammer-drill-driver kit, the DCD980L2 premium drill-driver kit (3.0-Ah), the DCD985L2 premium hammer-drill-driver kit, the DCF885C2 compact 1/4" impact driver kit (1.5-Ah), DCF885L2 1/4" impact driver kit (3.0-Ah), the DCS380L1 reciprocating saw kit (3.0-Ah), the DCS391L1 circular saw kit (3.0-Ah), the DCH213L2 3-mode SDS rotary hammer kit (3.0-Ah), and the DCL040 LCD worklight.

Drill Battery Charger

Of course, with this release there are more than a handful of things that require mentioning, I, however, feel obligated to begin with the actual voltage of the tools themselves. Many of you may be questioning that 20V badge that introduces these power tools and the truth of it is, despite that label, the 20V line still produces the same 18V of power. The initial battery voltage may very well be 20V, but the nominal voltage, or the actual voltage output, is still the standard 18V, no different from DEWALT's former 18V platform (that debuted in 1996) and no different from the 18V lines of competing manufacturers.

I should also note that unlike the previous 18V platform's focus on backwards compatibility, the 20V MAX battery is not compatible with DEWALT's other 18V volt stem-style battery system. Coming in a 1.5-Ah and a 3.0-Ah version, though, the 20V batteries are compatible with each other (so to speak); they can be charged from the same charger and can be used interchangeably between 20V MAX tools. In other words, whether your drill-driver came with a 3.0-Ah or a 1.5-Ah battery, you can use either battery with that tool and you can charge both batteries in the same place.

These 20V batteries also come with a 3-year warranty and boast up to 35% longer run-time and up to 57% faster charging cycles. The batteries, with their slide-on rather than stem-up design, are also considerably lighter-weight and contribute significantly to the tools' overall ergonomics. In part, these batteries are so much more compact because their module (or the electronics that control them) has been moved out of the actual battery and into the tool. This renders the battery more efficient and less expensive to the end-user.

So, despite that bit of tricksy name-gaming (which, according to DEWALT, is strictly to avoid compatibility confusion), the power tools of the new MAX release offer notable innovations that nonetheless separate the 20V MAX line from the former (but certainly not gone or forgotten) 18V platform.

For starters, and also like the 12V MAX line, these 20V tools are compact and streamlined for a thinner, more ergonomic grip and for altogether better comfort on the job. Sure, the speed and power improvements of these 20 volters are modest to say the least, but the tools' ergonomics and cosmetic enhancements are not to shake a stick at. Each tool is ideally balanced and boasts a lightweight and compact design comfortable for extended, awkward, or close-quarter applications. DEWALT has also incorporated 3-LED lights to improve visibility and accuracy in virtually any working condition.

DEWALT's 20V line is high-performance and, without a doubt, takes that high-performance standard seriously. These tools are aggressive yet smooth, powerful yet controllable, and they offer a sleek professional power tool to those looking to upgrade their existing 18V equipment or for those who simply have a bug for fancy power tools. For those who have no interest in this new line, however, DEWALT claims they will maintain the former 18V platform and continue improving upon it (within the limits of its stem-style battery design) until the demand for this platform disappears.

Who Needs a Lithium Screw Driver?

You Do! Lithium screwdrivers have only been out for a couple of years but you now see them all over. With the introduction of lithium battery technology, these small but powerful tools are becoming a must have for many tradesman and hobbyists alike.

Drill Battery Charger

Take for instance an electrician or low voltage contractor. These techs not only drill and install but a good portion of their job each day is loosening and tightening screws for their install work. Think how many faceplate screws, emt connectors and light fixtures an electrician tightens each day. A lithium screwdriver is the perfect tool not only to speed up his day but also reduce possible wrist problems after a few years.

Drill Battery Charger

Think about an cabinet installer. Any given day he installs hinges, knobs and slide. Most of these are installed with small number six screws. You just don't need the 18 volt Makita to set these small screws. Most of these types of fastenings are done both in tight corners and on finished product. You need something small and light to get into these spots and not damage the finished product. A lithium screwdriver fit's the bill. Most lithium screwdrivers have a light that comes on with just a touch of the trigger that lights up any dark areas you may find inside a cabinet.

There are endless types of assembly work that will benefit from use of a cordless lithium screwdriver. Many of assembly jobs have been using cordless screwdrivers for years. The same old complaint not enough power or run time comes up. A lithium screwdriver not only is lighter and has more run time, they get more charge cycles than standard NiCad cordless screwdrivers. When you run these tools all day, that is a big deal.

Hobbyist have always love cordless screwdrivers and they really love lithium screwdrivers. While many of the first tools available were expensive and intended only for the contractors, many less expensive models are on the market today and are finding their way into many hobbyists hands. Any hobby from model railroads, radio control, woodworking and model building will be easier and more fun with a lithium screwdriver at the ready.

As mentioned above many less expensive drivers are the market now so many home owners are keeping one around for any number of small projects around the house. Even if you don't use it a lot, just a couple of minutes on the charger will usually give you enough run time to hang a picture or install a new fixture. Now that I think about it, I may want a second less expensive unit in my RV.

Don't rush out and by the cheapest lithium screwdriver you can find, think about what you are going to do with it. If you are a contractor or assembly worker who is going to use it day in and day out, the cheaper units just aren't going to cut it for you. If you are a home owner who wants to have it on hand, just in case, a top of the line tool may be unnecessary . To answer the question at the start, who needs a lithium screwdriver? You do!

Cordless Drills For DIY People

If you are looking for a great cordless drill you will want to check out what is out there. There are models that you can get to make your work load so much easier. You can even give them a test drive right in the store before you purchase one. There are going to be different pros and cons to each of them. you will also find that the controls are going to be easier to run as well.

Drill Battery Charger

Different things on a cordless drill

Drill Battery Charger

With cordless drills you will find different speeds. The harder materials are going to need to be used with lower speeds. You can count on an adjustable clutch to help you with many projects. These will change automatically with the needs of each material. This is going to be ideal for the first time drill user. You will not have to think about what you are doing with each item that you are drilling.

You may want to consider what level of power you have with the drill. The voltage range will be anywhere from two to twenty four. You may want to consider everything that you will need. It is good to chose a drill with higher voltages than what you think you are going to need so that you have the power for any job.

The battery is going to be something else to think about. A battery life will be different with every drill. You should look for one that comes with two batteries. Because of this, you can use the drill with one batter and have the other one on charge for when you need it. there will be no need to stop working because you will have constant power.

Makers of the cordless drills

A good name is Makita in cordless drills. This is a very popular name in many of the woodworking shops. This company was the first to give cordless drills and will only advance in technology. They are dependable and will last a long time.

There will be different features on all the drills so you should choose what is going to be better suited for you as well.

A good idea is the Makita compact drill. This is a ½ inch drill that is going to be great for anyone. It is easy and fast to operate. You will have the different features that you are looking for as well as a shift lock mode that will make your job of drilling so much easier. This drill will come with two batteries for longer work time too.

A Ridgid 1//2 inch drill will have a whole 18 volts of power for you to enjoy. This item is going to come with good batteries and a dual charger that will allow both of them to be charge at the same time. You will see that the features of a two speed machine and hard working clutch will make this drill one of the better choices for any one on a mission.

The 3/8 Ridgid cordless drill has plenty of power with the 14.4 volts. It is going to have all the power that you need but may be heavy for some. The options will include different speeds, reverse, and the everlasting 24 type clutch. You will enjoy two battery packs with this too.

Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 09-17438 Review

I bought the Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool two months ago to test out and review.

Drill Battery Charger

Nextec Multi-Tool

Drill Battery Charger

I used the circular saw blade to trim a 1 X 6 out in the yard. I used the flush blade to cut the bottom of a door jamb so I could install tile in the bathroom. I used the carbide blade to clean out the grout so I could replace a 6 X 6 tile that I put in wrong. I used the scraper blade to remove some double sided tape so I could put in a new door weather seal. I used the sanding pad to sand a leg on an adirondack chair before I painted it. I used the rasp to change the angle on a chair leg brace.

I did all this without dragging out a cord, a sander, an angle grinder, a wood file, a putty knife, a circular saw or a hammer and chisel. I did all of these tasks easily and in a lot less time than it would normally take. I did all these tasks with just one tool!

There are a lot of similar multi-tools on the market. The Craftsman Multi-Tool is not the first and it is not the best, but it is the best value at only . And it's cordless! It is similar to the Bosch PS-50, Fein Multimaster, and Dremel Multi-Max. The Craftsman multi-tool is like the others and is even compatible with the Fein accessories but it's a lithium-ion cordless multi-tool for only (The Dremel Multi-Max is corded for ). And as a bonus, like the Fein Multimaster, it comes with an integrated dust bypass vacuum adapter so you can hook it up to your shop vac or dust collection system.

I don't consider the Craftsman Multi-tool as a heavy-duty tool. In fact the tool will get hot around the battery area if you use it on too large a task (3 to 4 batteries in a row.) It is just a great tool for those special small to medium jobs around the house that I have all the time. It is a great "around the house" tool. If you need a tool like this to work for you all day long or have a large project like scraping an entire house before painting you really should buy a heavier tool like the Fein Multi-Master.

NEXTEC Multi-Tool Features:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool comes in a handy carrying case along with a 30 minute quick charger and six attachments. The Multi-Tool is powered by a 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery.

Some of the key features of this tool are:

15000 OPM/ 2.8 oscillation angle
LED work light
includes 6 accessories (blades and sanders)
Soft-grip Handle
Compact Ergonomic design
Integrated dust bypass with vacuum adapter
Powerful, compact motor
Secure accessory mount
Powered by 12 Volt Lithium-Ion battery
30-minute quick charger with LED charge indicator:

Quickly charges the battery and features a charge indicator that visually indicates the charging status.

Compact ergonomic design: ultra compact for use in tight spaces Lithium-Ion Power: Lighter weight, better performance and longer shelf life.

Weight: 1.8 lbs with battery Accessories I recommend buying an extra battery.

If you already own an Craftsman Auto Hammer or any of the NEXTEC Line you already have a spare. You can order spare battery and blades through ToolBoxHero (see link below)

Final Thoughts:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool performed very well when using it the way it's meant to be used. This tool is not a replacement for the heavy-duty plug in versions like the Fein Multimaster. It is a great cordless multi-tool that will work very well around the house. The price really makes the Craftsman Multi-Tool shine!

If the appliance you are planning on using is listed in watts, just go ahead and use that number. If it is listed in amps you just need to use this simple formula: volts (120) X amps (listed on device) = watts. This will give you the amount of watts the appliance will be using. So if you had a 3 amp appliance, and you wanted to find the watts, the formula would be: 120 (volts) X 3 (amps) = 360 watts.

You would then total all of the watts that you will be using and come up with a number. Lets say your total watts usage is 500 watts. If that's the case it would be a good idea to get a 750 watt inverter. Always get a larger size than what you think you will need, it may come in handy.

Your next step will be to determine where your power supply is going to come from. If it is for emergency purposes there is a very good chance that it will be coming from a battery hooked up to your vehicle, or you may be a little better prepared and have a bank of batteries hooked up in a parallel fashion. Since most people reading this are probably unfamiliar with creating a battery bank I will just cover running the inverter from the vehicle. The main thing to know is what type of battery you will be using. It is suggested that you have a deep cycle battery or those that are used for trolling motors or golf carts and that you get as many amp hours as your budget allows. A few years back I was able to go 11 days using a 750w inverter and a 120amp hour deep cycle battery attached to my car. I had to run the car for 10 minutes every 2 hours to run everything that I had hooked up which was a laptop, 13" color tv, direct tv receiver, modem for the laptop, 40w light, and a small box fan. That doesn't sound like much, but I thought I was staying at the Ritz Carlton compared to most of my neighbors.

The last thing you need to know is how long will your power supply (battery) last before it needs recharging. First you will need to know the wattage of all the appliances. Lets say we have 480 total watts of power being used, and we are running our inverter off of a 12 volt battery attached to the car. Next we have to convert this number so that we know how many amps are being used. We do this by taking the watts (480) and dividing it by 12 (volts of the battery) and come up with 40 amps. The formula is: watts / volts = amps. If we have a 120 amp hour battery we would divide 120 (amp hours) by 40 (amps) and get 3 hours before the battery is dead. It is recommended not to drain a battery below 50% of its capacity so you may want to divide the 3 hour in half giving you 1 1/2 hour before starting the car up to recharge the battery.

Black Friday Hitachi UC18YRL Universal Charger for 7.2-to-18-Volt Ni-Cad Ni-Mh Lithium-Ion Batteries Overview

Hitachi model
No. UC18YRL universal rapid charger. Charges 7.2V to 18V NiCd, NiMH, and lithium ion batteries.

Black Friday Hitachi UC18YRL Universal Charger for 7.2-to-18-Volt Ni-Cad Ni-Mh Lithium-Ion Batteries Specifications

The Hitachi UC18YRL Universal Battery Charger is designed to recharge the Hitachi EBM1830 HXP Battery. And for added flexibility and convenience, this charger can also recharge other compatible 7.2-18 volt, Lithium-Ion, NiCd and NiMH batteries. It is important to fully charge your battery before attempting to use it in your power tools. To use your UC18YRL charger properly, connect the charger power cord to the base and then insert the battery into the charger. Position the battery so that the nameplate faces toward the nameplate of the charger and press the battery into place until it comes into full contact with the bottom plate. Inserting the battery turns the charger on, and the pilot lamp should light up red. If the pilot lamp does not light up, pull out the power cord from the base and check the battery mounting condition. Once your battery is fully charged, the pilot lamp will slowly blink red and you're battery will be ready to use. In general, the UC18YRL should charge your battery in 20-45 minutes depending on the type of battery (the Hitachi EBM1830 charges in 45 minutes). Although the variation is minor, ambient temperature above or below room temperature may effect recharging time.

Added flexibility and convenience allows this charger to recharge other compatible 7.2-18 volt Lithium Ion NiCd and NiMH batteries.

Universal charger charges 7.2 volt to 18 volt Hitachi Lithium-Ion batteries as well as NiCd and NiMH batteries of same voltage.

HXP batteries have a low power discharge while in storage.
Recharging New Batteries: What to Expect
The internal chemical substance of new batteries and batteries that have not been used for an extended period is not activated, thus the electric discharge might be low when using them the first or second time. This is a temporary phenomenon and is not cause for alarm. The normal time required for recharging will be restored by recharging the battery 2-3 times.

How to Make Your Battery Perform Longer
The best way to take full advantage of your charger, and maximize the life of your battery, is to follow two easy steps. First, remember to recharge your battery before it becomes completely exhausted. When you feel that the power of the tool becomes weaker, stop using the tool and recharge the battery. If you continue to use the tool and exhaust the electric current, the battery may be damaged and its life will become shorter. Secondly, you should always avoid recharging your batteries at high temperatures. A rechargeable battery will be hot immediately after use. If a battery is recharged while it's still hot, its internal chemical substance will deteriorate, and the battery life will be shortened.
