Do Home Built Wind Power Generators Really Work?

With so many emerging green technologies, it can be difficult to choose one that will best meet your specific needs. Many people have begun to experiment within their own homes, using inexpensive or salvaged material. One technology that has demonstrated significant progress is that of wind turbines. But do home built wind power generators really work? Let's investigate!

Drill Battery Charger

There are many different methods for constructing such a device, but first we should examine what we need to accomplish. Our home built generators job is to capture the movement of the wind with fan blades, and convert it into electricity to be stored. This is actually a pretty simple idea. The difficult part is maximizing efficiency in different ways. One option is to try different blade configurations for your rotor, and see if one is able to spin more readily than another. More effective designs will spin faster at lower wind speeds, giving you more juice to store in your batteries.

Converting the movement into electricity is also quite simple. It is an electromagnetic motors job to convert electricity into movement. Using a small motor from a cordless drill or something similar, you can hook it up to the turbine "backwards," in such a fashion that instead of electricity producing the movement, the movement produces electricity! Such small motors can often be salvaged for free or purchased secondhand at low cost.

Once your turbine is mounted and assembled, you'll need to consider a storage solution for your newly discovered electricity. Deep cycle batteries, often in an array are used for this purpose. As the energy generated from such a device would not be enough to power many devices in real time, the turbine is basically an earth friendly battery charger, and the real meat of your energy usage will come from the batteries. So do home built wind power generators really work? Absolutely! Try it yourself.
