The Right Laser for Your Job

With so many laser options, how can you know you've chosen the right laser pointer for your job? Different types are appropriate for different jobs, and knowing which is best for your present and future jobs is helpful information when making the purchase. Take a look at the below tips to getting the best one for your job.

Single line lasers. These are meant for simple do-it-yourselfers and those who are not professional builders. Used for hanging a picture or shelf straight, these are tools that will come to benefit light users. I personally use a laser when hanging paintings.

Laser square lasers. Two beams are ejected to form a 90 degree angle, so there is no discrepancy that tiles on a floor or joint beams are level. Can be used by professionals or do-it-yourselfers. Handy for other projects, like laying tiles or hanging photos. I have used a laser square when helping lay bricks in a basement.

Line lasers. Used mainly by construction workers, electricians and carpenters, these lasers shoot a beam across the room or wall for, say, laying out of cabinets. They are used for jobs using wider materials that need to be even across the board, like constructing a stairway.

Dot lasers. A dot is projected from the tool to show a specific point of reference. This type of laser comes in handy for electricians and plumbers, to transfer measurements from here to there or to pin point just one spot where their attention should focus.

Rotary lasers. As they spin around, these tools can help users see the big picture of the project at hand. They can be used while landscaping, laying concrete or building a deck so that the surface is even all-around. There are different levels of projection, so be sure to purchase the one with the correct reach.

Colors. There are both red and green beams. While a green beam is much brighter than red, they both measure just the same. Color simply comes down to personal preference.

Indoor or outdoor. Laser beams are difficult to see on a sunny day, and a bit easier to see on a cloudy day. If working outside with this tool, consider investing in a laser detector.

Accessories. Any type of laser can come with a remote control, attachment to hang or battery charger. Be sure your tool has the accessories you need to complete your job.
